Finalizing Important Matters
Settling a loved one’s estate involves legal, financial, and administrative tasks. To assist you, we’ve compiled
key contacts and steps to take.
Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)
- File the deceased’s final tax return.
- Provide a copy of the Will and Death Certificate.
- Notify CRA to cancel GST credits.
- Call 1-800-959-8281 for guidance.
Service Canada
- Report the death to Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Old Age Security (OAS) at 1-800-277-9914.
- Survivor benefits may be available.
- Any pension received in the month of death can be kept; after that, payments must be returned.
- Service Canada Benefit Forms
Probating the Will - Probate may be required to legally validate the Will.
- A lawyer can advise on probate or next steps if no Will exists.
- If needed, the original Will is required.
Alberta Registries
- Surrender the deceased’s driver’s license.
- Verify and cancel vehicle registrations.
Credit Cards & Financial Accounts
- Contact credit card companies to close accounts.
- Complete and send letters to Equifax and TransUnion to prevent identity theft.
