Laura Lucina Storey (MacGregor)

You are here: Obituaries / Laura Lucina Storey (MacGregor)
April 1, 1966 - May 18, 2021

It is with profound sadness and much love that the family of Laura Lucina Storey (nee MacGregor) of Sexsmith, Alberta mourn her sudden passing on the 18th of May, 2021, at the age of 55 years, with her family by her side.

Laura was born in Golden, BC, to Milt and Gail MacGregor, and was the oldest of 3 children. The daughter of an RCMP officer, she learned that moving frequently was part of her early life, living in 4 different communities in BC, before finally settling back to the family farm near Holden, Alberta. She graduated from Holden High School in 1983 and was determined to pursue a career in education. She graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelors in Education with a music focus in 1987, and found her passion for teaching at the Kitwanga Elementary School in BC. She married and settled into teaching at Smithers, BC for more than 10 years, before moving to Grande Prairie, Alberta, where she continued her 30+ year career of educating future generations, with her unique specialty in music and French.

Laura was also an active volunteer in her community, continuing to put others before herself, and selflessly caring for her community and colleagues. She was an active member with the Clairmont United Church, the 577 Grande Prairie Royal Canadian Air Cadets, the Alberta Teachers Association, as well as many non-profit organizations and youth groups throughout the years. She loved spending her free time singing with the Seraphina Women’s Choir in Grande Prairie, as music was obviously ingrained in her soul.

Laura was also an avid skydiver throughout her early adulthood. She travelled all over British Columbia to compete in provincial competitions to showcase her skills, even beating out the other professionals for the gold medals. You could always find her in the sky with her trademark pink and blue jumpsuit and parachute. Her interests and hobbies at home included family, gardening, reading, and of course musical development, as she was just reaching the halfway mark of completing her Master’s Degree in Education. She devoted much of her time and energy to ensure that her family and friends were flourishing as much as her garden.

Laura will be lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of 28 years, Roy Storey, and their two sons, Benjamin and Lawson Storey. Laura is also survived by her brother; Neil (Regan) MacGregor, and her sister; Sharon (Peter) MacGregor, her father; Milt MacGregor, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her cousin, Damon York and her mother, Gail MacGregor.

Her smile and loving presence will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew her.

A memorial service will be held at the Clairmont United Church on June 27th 2021 for immediate family.

It was a pleasure to have known Laura. I met her working with the Mighty Peace Teachers Convention Board. She was passionate about life-long learning and was fun and joyful. She will be dearly missed with us as well. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.
