It is with deep sadness that we share the unexpected passing of Gary Lopaschuk at the age of 69.
Gary was born in 1955 to Bill and Toni Lopaschuk, and grew up in B.C with his two siblings, Lynn and Randy. While his passing was sudden, and far too soon, he lived a rich life, full of adventure, travel, and scientific achievements. From a young age it was clear that Gary was a very gifted student, and went on to earn his PhD in Pharmacology in 1983 from the University of British Columbia. He was a distinguished professor, and a respected mentor and teacher at the University of Alberta for 35 years.
Gary’s career allowed him to travel extensively, and explore the world to a degree that very few experience. He loved golf, fishing, cross country skiing, and was a diehard Oilers fan. He also loved Scotch and wine.
Gary and his wife Catharine had three children, Sarah, David, and Tim to whom he was a wonderful and supportive father. He pushed his kids to pursue their dreams, and to be the best versions of themselves. Gary adored his only grandchild, Terry. He also leaves behind his partner, Donna, whom he loved very much.
A scholarship has been created in Gary’s name in order to carry on his legacy of helping students in the field of cardiac research. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made to the Dr. Gary Lopaschuk Memorial Fund at the University of Alberta.
