Ross Edmund Hoyle

Ross Edmund Hoyle passed away peacefully at 92 years of age, surrounded by the comfort and love of his family, following a sudden illness. His life was defined by extraordinary resilience, a gentle nature, his guidance, and unconditional devotion to his family.

Ross is lovingly remembered by his five children: Jeannie (Kai), Heather (Dave), Janet (Albert), Duncan (Johanne) and Catherine (Cory); as well as his eleven beloved grandchildren: Ross (Emily), Faye (Ryan), Dale (Shay), Emily, Michael (Kazha), Katie, Melanie (Dan), Connor, Maeghan, Iona and Erik; and his eight cherished great grandchildren: Lily and Elon; Sloane and Senna; Levi and Noah; Elaina and Vivienne. He is also survived by his sister, Betty (Wayne); his brother, Gordie (Billie); as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his true love, Jean; his parents, Beatrice and Hugh Hoyle; parents-in-law, Jane (Jean) and Donald McKay, as well as his siblings and their spouses, Dorothy (Irvin), Alfred (Ken) (Evelyn) and Hugh (Barbara), as well as all seven of Jean’s siblings and their spouses.

Ross was born in Edmonton and was the second oldest in a family of six children. He attended John A. McDougall, MacCauley and Victoria Composite High schools and, while a student at the University of Alberta working a summer job at the CNR in the early 1950’s, he met his wife, Jean. Jean worked in the office, and Ross worked as a porter or in the office between terms to assist him in paying his tuition. He completed his Chemistry degree with honours. Ross and Jean were married in 1956, and Ross took a position with BA Oil in Ontario for a couple of years, and later moved home to Edmonton and worked at Chemcel/Celanese and then Syncrude up until his retirement. Ross and Jean were married for over 49 years until her passing in 2005.

Thankfully, Ross was healthy all of his life and was with family caring for him until his first-ever unplanned hospital stay. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the physicians, nurses, and all staff at the University Hospital, Unit 5F3 – Family Medicine and Palliative Care, for their kind and compassionate care of Ross while in the hospital.

A memorial will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 10025-105 Street, NW, Edmonton, AB T5J 1C8 on Saturday, October 3, 2026 at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.
