In Loving Memory of Shirley Anne Marie McGuey.
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Shirley Anne Marie McGuey, who peacefully passed away on December 20, 2024. Shirley was born in Whitney, Ontario, as the 13th of 14 children in her family. She never considered being number 13 to be bad luck but rather a unique part of her story.
Shirley was the beloved daughter of the late Frank and Beatrice (Slater) McGuey. She was predeceased by four brothers: Stanley, John, Irvin, and James; and five sisters: Grace, Evelyn, Margaret, Ivy, and Georgina.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Rebecca (Dallen); her grandson, Matthew McGuey; and her great-grandchildren, Blake and Sierra McGuey, who will continue to cherish her memory.
Before moving to Alberta with her brother Stanley, Shirley was an avid fan of the Ottawa Valley country music scene. She had many hobbies, but the one she loved most was taking care of her nieces and nephews. Shirley also had a deep love for animals. She had always wanted a Siamese cat, and her wish was fulfilled when she got a seal point Siamese named Dusty. She also had a German Shepherd dog named Sheba, both of whom brought her great joy.
Shirley faced life with incredible strength, especially after being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer 14 years ago. Her faith in prayer helped her through the toughest times, though she was left unable to walk after her battle with cancer. Despite this, Shirley maintained a positive attitude, showing courage and resilience that inspired all who knew her.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 4303-20 Ave NW, Edmonton, Alberta. A service will also be held in Ottawa in the spring of 2025.
Shirley’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
